The General Tarleton - #Review

Easter Lunch at The General Tarleton.


So, on Easter Saturday last weekend, my family and I went out to lunch in Ferrensby, North Yorkshire. I myself had not been to The General Tarleton before, but my parents had been. I was excited to try somewhere a bit different and was already thinking about what I could have for lunch!



Located just 5 miles from beautiful Harrogate and 3 miles from the A1 it is in the perfect location if you happen to be in the Yorkshire region, or indeed just passing by!

"At The GT there's a firm focus on food, using high quality locally sourced ingredients. Patron and award-winning chef John Topham works with a highly regarded Head Chef to create fresh, seasonal dishes for a menu that combines modern exisiting cusine with some ever popular favourites" (Source)

They also have 13 bedrooms, all stylishly and individually decorated to the of highest of standards with those little touches of luxury which make for a truly relaxing night.  
 


To start with, I opted for an obligatory Gin and Slim.


Perusing the menus it was good to see a good choice of seasonal food for both Starters and Mains. It's always a tough choice trying to decide what to have, but in the end I went for Queenie Scallops to start...



Followed by Slow Cooked Shoulder Confit of Lamb for Main!


 The ambiance of The General Tarleton is relaxed. The exposed brick and wood burner lend themselves to making yourself comfortable, like you are at home. I can imagine that during winter when the burner is fully alight, you are going to feel so warm and toasty. The staff were very attentive, because we were the only ones there when we arrived (we ate early, 12:30!) they offered us drinks and showed us to our table straight away. They were only too happy to cater to us, getting some nuts for my Granny as she kept asking if they had any garlic bread/nibbles! >.< After my Dad's Black Sheep Pint was cloudy - getting to the end of the barrel - Enzo the Front of House Manager kindly offered to change the barrel or for a pint of another - Landlord. Dad chose the Landlord!




The table decorations were lovely, a touch of Spring with a little vase of Tulips. The seat covers were quirkily patterned but added a touch of colour into the room and were very comfortable to sit on.

Back to the food!!!


The Queenie Scallops with cheese and a crunchy salad were delicious. Served in their shells gave them a realistic touch and was the first time I had actually had them that way! The scallops themselves still had their orange coral attached but this didn't put me off and was actually quite delicious, mainly because of the cheese! The crispy salad lent itself well to offset the smoothness of the scallops. I used the lemon to dress the salad and also to add a tang to the scallops.

The Smoked Confit Shoulder of Lamb with spiced Baba Ganoush, pistachio goat's curd and white onion puree was very tasty. I had never had lamb confit before and it was certainly different. It was quite a large serving and I found I could not finish it all which is very unlike me! The onion/baba ganoush was spiced to perfection, not for heat but for taste. I did find this to be slightly too oily for my liking, but perhaps you would've liked it?? The pistachio goat's curd was different, I had never had it before but it was smooth and the pistachios added a bit of texture to it. The lamb was sitting on a bed of spinach and it was good to see some green on the plate because I have to admit I was bemoaning the lack of vegetables!!

To finish, I rounded off my meal with one of my favourite desserts, crème brulee! This one was not a disappointment, except maybe for the lack of brulee on the top! The crème itself was delightfully smooth and silky. It was served with two crispy shortbread biscuits which are homemade on site and were absolutely delicious. The strawberry on the side was a summery touch!
