have decided to start a new series here on Writing & Rambling
after meeting so many lovely bloggers on Twitter I would like to get
to know them. So I am going to try to recruit as many as I can as I
think everyone deserves a chance to be in the spotlight. =)
Hello there, nice to have you here on Writing & Rambling! Please
could you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your
I’m Beverley, and I’m the writer behind the travel and lifestyle
blog Pack Your Passport. I write about solo city breaks, life in
Leeds, books, and food, with the odd personal essay thrown in for
good measure. I've recently moved back to Leeds where I went to university, and now divide my time between my job as a PR manager, freelance writing and my addiction to flat whites!
At what point did you decide to make a Blog and share it with the
moved to Australia on a working holiday visa in 2010 and I’d mostly
been living in Sydney but it wasn’t until 2011, when I was living
in Melbourne, that I decided to start Pack Your Passport. I’d
always loved to write and I was travelling at the time, so (without
putting much thought into the name, domain, or what I would actually
want to write about in the future!) I started a blog.
How would you describe your writing style? Has it changed over time
try to write how I speak, for the most part, which means if I would
have cursed in real life I will absolutely 100% curse on the blog. I
didn’t used to do this because I wanted to appear ~professional~
but, then, I’ll take being real and relatable over that any day.
When it comes to writing personal essay type blog posts, I defer to
my “other” style of writing which is a little more colourful and
descriptive and meant to make the reader, I guess, feel something
rather than provide them with any kind of information.
Was there anyone in particular who inspired you? Which Bloggers do
is going to sound really weird but, before I started my blog, I
didn’t really read any blogs. Ok, I didn’t read blogs at all. Not
because I didn’t want to, but because I didn’t know they existed,
so I didn’t really have any inspiration, as such, when I started.
Nowadays I find so many other bloggers and writers inspiring,
especially those who write from the heart and from personal
experience and aren’t afraid to be super honest in their writing.
Do you have anything in the pipeline on the Blog which you are
particularly excited about?!
just started a brand new newsletter for the blog, called TheLetterB,
which I am SUPER excited about but I don’t have anything in the
pipeline except more posts and newsletters at the moment. Outside of
the blog I do have another online project I’m working on with some
awesome ladies but I can’t say too much about it at this stage,
Does anyone else know about your Blog? What do they think about it??
think, for a lot of bloggers, their first readers are family and
friends, but that never really happened with Pack Your Passport. My
parents and friends know about my blog, of course, but most of my
readers are strangers (ie. people who find the blog through Google),
people who follow me on social media and (as with many blogs) other
Are you obsessed with Lush!?!? If YES what is your favourite
never actually bought anything from Lush so I guess...no? Maybe I’ll
pop in next time I’m near one :)
Has your Blog helped you in other areas of life?!
so much! I don’t think I would have been so confident offering
freelance commissions and doing copywriting for other companies if I
didn’t have a kind of “portfolio” of work to show online. It
also helped me get my first job in London, as an outreach exec,
because as a blogger I could demonstrate how I understood the
community which, in turn, helped me transition into becoming a PR
consultant at the same company.
also met so many wonderful people through blogging, many of whom have
become proper, IRL friends.
What is it that makes you so fabulous?!
(after 30 years?) I’m kind of at the point where I feel like I
don’t have to apologise for being myself, nor do I want to hang out
with people who don’t make my heart soar. Does that, turn, *make*
me fabulous? I don’t know. But it FEELS pretty fabulous to me,
which, I suppose, is the main thing.
Finally, can you recommend anything to us today!? (Skincare/Beauty/Tv
just finished an amazing book by Anne Lamott called Bird by Bird
which is, basically, essential reading for those who write, or want
to write. Make-up wise, I swear by Rimmel Exaggerate waterproof
liquid eyeliner (stays on way longer than the non waterproof one, I
think) and I also love No7 Protect and Perfect serum.
