Gatlin - a leafy, affluent town: Chelsea tractors and ladies who lunch. However, all is not as it seems. Drea, a most unnatural mother, struggles to find private school fees for her step-daughter Ava after her boyfriend leaves her for another woman. Watching the yummy mummies she becomes inspired, hatching a daring and criminal plan...unleashing all hell in the quiet town of Gatlin. Can Drea survive the fallout and the wrath of the PTA? A satirical and hilarious black comedy about love, motherhood and the human condition.
I absolutely LOVED this book from the moment I first got my hands on it I couldn't put it down and feasted eagerly on the words like some sort of starving literary student! I honestly could not get enough of Drea and her plans to become 'a good enough mother' to step daughter Ava whom she didn't want to let down by pulling her out of her fancy private school and subjecting her to more humiliation that had already been shown by her father who abandoned her with a woman who clearly didn't want to be a mother in the first place! The way Drea comes to life through the pages shows just how incredible a writer Anoushka Beazley is. As with every book I read i imagine the scenarios in my mind and her words instantly brought Gatlin, Ava and Drea to life for me I could so easily picture her planning her attacks and then following through with them; to rob Gatlin's social set and sell their wares online to enable her to pay the school fees. Everything about this book is set out brilliantly and i reckon everyone would love it, it's an easy read, but one which is full of intrigue and mystery as well as a parent's overwhelming love for their children even if said children aren't biologically theirs and they really feel like they don't want to be a mother at all! I guess it just shows Drea's ability to show up and be there for Ava after her father leaves her for another woman who clearly, for whatever reason, doesn't have time for family life. We see more of Drea through her actions, however misguided, than we ever do about her so called father. It is written so well and hooks you instantly from page one that I am eagerly awaiting the next instalement, if there was ever to be one!! If not then i guess I shall just have to re-read The Good Enough Mother until another of Anoushka's wonderful books is published!! Thank You so much for sending me a copy of this book because as you can probably tell, I am now a huge fan of your work!! I absolutely loved it!! Thank You Anoushka!!
