#smallbiz Series!

Hello there! I have decided to start another new series on my Blog, this time focussing on small businesses. Being a blogger I am regularly put in touch with owners of small businesses and it is a really enjoyable part of being a blogger. Whether it be reviewing a product, service or finding a new company which sells fashion at an affordable price, there is often a small team of people behind it, plugging away, putting in the late nights and the early mornings trying everything to make a success out of their little business. I do feel, that as bloggers we do owe some responsibility to them as more and more of them are turning to Twitter and bloggers alike to promote themselves. Plus, I think it's fun being one of only a handful of bloggers lucky enough to discover a burgeoning business and getting to trial some of their products! Or is that just me!?

I have found all of the business I'll be featuring on twitter, under the hashtag #smallbiz as that is where they were all hiding! To start with, I'll be featuring a couple of the small businesses I've already come into contact with, as that way I hope that a few of you will have already heard of them too!

You can also catch up with Parts 1-7 so far here: Part 1Part 2 | Part 3Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Special Feature Forever Memory Bears.

So if you like finding new places to buy fashion, beauty or a present for your loved one, sit back, grab a cuppa and read on!

Today I'm featuring Axiski, the cool snowboard come sledge that can be ridden on virtually any surface! No longer do you have to wait for a decent amount of snow to enjoy the thrill of whizzing down a hill, simply take your Axiski and hop on! Can be ridden on grass, sand dunes, frosty grass! Cool huh?!?!

Axisledge came about in 2010 when Hannah and her sister phoned their Dad at work to ask if he could buy them a sledge but they had sold out! Not wanting to be out done, and being a bit of 'big kid' himself, their Dad went into his shed and made one! Apparently it was rubbish and he was sent back, he later came out with a 'skiboard' that Hannah and her sister could use as a sledge but would double as a snowboard!

Once on the slopes all of their friends ditched their plastic sledges and wanted to play on what their Dad had made in his shed! He then made a few more and sold them for a fiver! And so began 'Axiski!'

Hannah's Dad then went through the process of making prototypes and amending his design to make it the best it could be. As you can see from the picture above, they went through various designs, plastics and sizes to make sure the product was what Dad wanted it to be.

Since launch they have sold in excess of 25,000 boards which just goes to show just how many adrenaline junkies are out there!! Haha!

What they have achieved:
  • Press releases in news papers and toy magazines
  • SBS winners 2013 - Meeting Theo Paphitis
  • Given talks at schools and universities for business, design and primary pupils
  • Supported charities
  • Given away axiskis as raffle prizes
  • Support local sport clubs (Worcester Netball Club, Hucclecote Netball Club and Worcester Wolves)
  • Experience with pitching to buyers (Robert Dyas)
  • Exported to 16 different countries
  • Talking live on the radio
  • Being a British product
  • Exhibition shows
  • Bright and vibrant colours
Pretty amazing huh!?!?! But of course, with the highs come the lows and the failures:
  • Giving away Axiski’s to people who have said they will take pictures and videos and they haven’t
  • Paying for banners as advertisement
  • Advertising in wrong areas
  • Experimenting with packaging solutions, labels and stickers
  • Finding the right price to sell our product
  • Deciding what languages to use on our tags

Designed to look and perform like a snow board, but with the added fun and practicality of a sledge, this beautifully designed board will see you skimming down snowy and frosty slopes in the winter months and wet grassy or sandy embankments throughout the summer and autumn months.

What’s more, the Axiski can be ridden in a variety of different ways, either solo or in pairs, so it’s a great way to have fun for families and groups of friends alike. Stand up and snow board, sit down and sledge, or even lie down facing forwards or backwards and get a beginner’s feel for those intense Olympic sports such as the luge and the skeleton.

There’s no need for any previous experience, so anyone can jump on board, grab the handle and freestyle down gentle hills. It is also ideal for parents to use with their younger children. We do recommend that you always wear suitable safety equipment and appropriate clothing, it can go very fast! This is why we believe that Axiski really does have the ‘edge over the sledge.’
Invented, designed and manufactured in the UK,
the Axiski is made from a high quality plastic which ensures it will not break like traditional sledges can often do. It was launched to much excitement at the GLEE exhibition September 2013 and was recently also fantastically received at the Autumn Fair held at the NEC in Birmingham. Axiski’s are being regularly shipped across Europe with sales to the Czech Republic, Iceland, Austria, Germany and Poland, Spain, France, Australia and even Russia!

From the start, their Dad’s ambition to extend Hannah's experience and knowledge of the Axiski as far as possible. He has been successful so far and she is having so much fun being involved with emails, marketing, selling, advertising, and modeling the Axiski!
It certainly seems like fun and I for one would LOVE to trial this on the hills we have around here!!! I hope you've enjoyed learning more about the Axiski today, I know I have!! Please go and visit their website and say hi on their social media, Hannah will be delighted to see you!
