Friday, 24 November 2017

By now you may either have started your Christmas shopping or have everything already (if you're in the latter category then I applaud you!) If you're still on the lookout for a present for the foodie in your life then I may just have the right gifts for you - stay tuned and keep reading to find out more!

The picture above features two mugs and the 'nipper jolly useful chopping board' from Doris and Co - a wonderfully British business who are devoted to making pottery using old traditional methods and making them available for all of us to enjoy. Their aim is to serve good people good things made in England. Their shapes and designs are based on Georgian or early industrial shapes, all taken from the moment in time all homewares were made by hand. I always love finding small British businesses to share with you all and Doris and Co are no exception to this. If I can share them and perhaps promote them a bit more so you go and check them out then I will! I hope you will take a look at their site because everything is so beautiful it will be hard to resist!

The Christmas mug is known as 'The Little Vintage Christmas Mug' and is now on sale for £7.95! I absolutely love it and it is the perfect size for a morning cup of tea or an evening hot chocolate. I actually have a set of Christmas plates from when I was younger so this mug will go perfectly with those when I have my Christmas dinner! Perhaps I could even have my mulled wine in there?? Yes?? Yes!

The second mug is known as their 'Enough Is As Good As A Feast Mug' and I absolutely love it! Retailing for £19.95 it will make the coffee/tea/hot chocolate lover in your home very happy this Christmas!  It matches perfectly with the 'Nipper Jolly Useful Board' and retails for £29.95 he is always ready to jump into action whenever you need him. Handsome enough to hang beside your cooker, ready to jump into Nipper Cold action as a chopping board, nibbles server and all round useful chap! You can even pop him in the oven with a round of cheese on and he comes into his own as Nipper Hot - gorgeously melting cheese all ready to be dipped into with friends and family. A real must for any kitchen!

Doris and Co is available to buy from their website and also a range of stockists which you can find out about online. Orders placed before 2PM are usually sent out the same day and standard delivery is with Royal Mail first class service so your oder should be with you within 2 working days, costs £3.95 and allows for a shipment of upto 2 mugs. Single larger item purchases (teapots, jugs, vases, jars and dishes) will cost £8.95.

Please go and check them out, all their items are absolutely beautiful and knowing they're all handmade in Britain just fills me with joy. Make Doris happy this festive season and buy British!

Luscombe Drinks - Tonics.

Now who doesn't love a great G&T at Christmas time?! I know I do and the hunt is always on for the perfect Tonic to accompany my favourite gin! Having always had the same tonic (Schweppes usually or more recently Fever Tree which is fast becoming my favourite!) the hunt was on for some different ones to try and this is where Luscombe drinks comes in. All of their Tonics are elegantly flavoured with Devon Spring Water for a truly enhanced taste and come in three flavours - Original, Elderflower and Grapefruit.

Based on a farm on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, Luscombe Drinks has been making fruit-based drinks with natural Devon spring water since 1975.

The flavours of Tonics made by Luscombe include:

OriginalRare Japanese yuzu pairs with Devon spring water and the distinctive taste of Indian quinine to create a classic tonic.

Elderflower - Hand-picked wild elderflower and Indian quinine come together with natural Devon spring water in this expertly crafted floral tonic.

GrapefruitSucculent pink grapefruit and classic Indian quinine infuse natural Devon spring water in this delicate citrus tonic.

I just had to try them with the Caorunn Gin pictured here and the general consensus amongest my family was my Mum liked the Elderflower Tonic, my Dad preferred the Original and my sister and I both liked the Grapefruit for the slight acidic twang it gave to the drink as a whole. We found the tonics themselves to be easy to drink, not overly fizzy and a pleasant addition to our Gins. I just wish I had more of them to have on Christmas Day!

Luscombe also do juices, fruit crushes, bubbles, traditional and ciders. They are available to purchase from independent retailers, farm shops and bars and restaurants.

The best thing about Luscombe drinks is that only natural ingredients are used, never a concentrate; and you wont find any artificial sweeteners, flavourings or preservatives. This attention to detail ensures that quality is never compromised.

How about a glass of (soft) bubbles this Christmas? I always start the day with a glass of Busk's Fizz but this Damascene Rose Bubbly looks delicious and you wouldn't look out of place sipping this whilst everyone else has Champagne!

Raise a toast with a flute of chilled Damascene Rose Bubbly, the sophisticated soft alternative to champagne. The satisfying tang of delicate rose petals married with Muscat grape is instantly refreshing, with a hint Sicilian lemon on the palate for a zingy lift. The Damascene Rose Bubbly is perfect with Christmas canapés.

A festive favourite, the vivid red Cranberry Crush will make a statement on any drinks table. Using the best Organic cranberries combined with Madagascan vanilla, Cranberry Crush has a subtle hint of caramel from Damascene rose water which rounds the crisp sharpness of the berries. The Cranberry Crush is an delicious soft drink to accompany traditional roast turkey and wintery game dishes.

32cl softs – £2.20
24cl Juices - £1.70
74cl Softs/juices - £3.35

Bennett Opies Limited - Preserved Lemons, Gerkins, Pickled Walnuts, Cocktail Cherries, Stem Ginger & Pickled Onions.

Opies are a family business which has been making a supplying quality food since 1880. Their purpose is simple, making quality products which families use time and again to delight their friends with. They only ever use British fruit in their compotes and only ever hand pickle walnuts, ensuring they never disappoint whenever a jar is opened. I love supporting British businesses so it's great to find one as great as Opies which still ensures manufacturing and jobs are kept in the UK. After all, we have the best fruit so it makes sense we get to enjoy it all!

Sometimes during the rush of the festive season, rushing around to get everyone's presents, making sure the tree is decorated and that all the food is bought, items can be forgotten and only remembered when you need a lemon for a G&T or a cocktail cherry for a glass of Champagne, a Manhattan or a lemon slice for a Gin Fizz! As more and more of us prefer casual get-togethers at home, it is important to avoid any embarrassing cocktail catastrophes this Christmas. It is then that Opie's Cocktail Cherries and Lemon Slices really come to the fore.

The vibrant colour of the cherries helps to create a certain 'je ne sais quoi' to homemade cocktails. Try in a Singapore Sling, Shirley Temple or retro Pina Colada. Cheer up a glass of Prosecco on Christmas morning or, if you have a cheap fizz that you are unsure of, a maraschino cherry makes it marvellous! It is all down the the best-grade fruits infused in a delicious, almondy flavoured syrup which really makes the difference.

Find them in the preserves or pickle aisle in most major supermarkets, priced from £1.48 for a 225g jar.

Ensure guests have the best-dressed G&T without the hassle. Never forget the 'slice' again and keep a jar of Opies Lemons in the fridge. They're more convenient and there's less waste too! The lemons are already sliced so there's never been an easier way to garnish the glass. Festive lurgy cold? Bring out the jar, pop in a few slices in a mug and steep in hot water (personally I add in a spoonful of honey for sweetness and to help my throat). Be Christmas ready and pop a jar in your trolley and it'll be another thing ticked off the shopping list!

RRP from £1.40 for a 350g jar.
I can see my family getting lots of use out of these jars over Christmas, from cocktails, G&Ts to the perfect addition to an antipasto platter on Boxing Day, there's nothing that will go to waste here!
