'If I Fall' By Ella Harper Blog Tour | Featuring Review & Author Q&A! | I Interview Ella Harper About Her Incredible New Thriller!

Thursday, 25 January 2018

Four university friends, four devastating secrets.

I’m really sorry for what I’m about to do...
It’s fifteen years since graduation, and Connie, Jonas, JJ and Layla have managed to remain close despite the odds. They’ve supported each other, but are some things too big for friendship?
Connie is desperate to maintain the veneer of perfect family life.
Jonas is feeling the pressure at work.
Layla’s career is unravelling thanks to her ill mother
JJ’s past is catching up with him.
When they stumble and fall, who will be there to catch them?
A truly powerful and unforgettable story of love, friendship, and real life, If I Fall is perfect for readers of Alice Peterson, Amanda Prowse and Lianne Moriarty.
Author Bio:
Ella Harper learned foreign languages, and imagined she might eventually get a glamorous job speaking French. After climbing her way up the banking ladder, Ella started idly mapping out the beginnings of a novel on an old laptop. When she realised her characters were more real to her than dividends and corporate actions ever could be, she left her job to become a writer.

Q1: Hello there, nice to have you here on SunshineSarahxo! Please could you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your book:

Hi there! It’s lovely to be on SunshineSarahxo. My name is Ella Harper and I write women’s fiction. I used to write under my own name (Sasha Wagstaff) but I changed my name when I changed genre. My new novel is called If I Fall and it’s about four friends who meet at University. We catch up with them in the current day and the reader is privy to a suicide note…but has no idea who might do something so drastic. It’s a kind of ‘who dunnit’ with a twist.

Q2: At what point did you decide to write books and share them with the world??

Whilst working at a bank, commuting into London. I wondered if I might be able to write my own novels, so I started to give it a go. It took a few years, but I got there in the end…
Q3: How would you describe your writing style? Has it changed over time at all?

I would describe my writing style as…chatty, friendly, funny, sexy, serious and deep in parts! Yes, it has changed over time. I think my novels were almost my writing class as such, so I’m sure (I hope!) I have improved over the years.

Q4: Was there anyone in particular who inspired you? Which authors do you emulate?

I have mentioned her a few times recently but I do love Lianne Moriarty. But I also like Adele Parks, Jilly Cooper, Fiona Walker, Lisa Jewell and Jenny Colgan. And I’m sure I’ve still forgotten some of my favourites.
Q5: Do you have any other books in the pipeline which you are excited about?!

I am in the ‘thinking’ part of that process….but I would love to write a children’s book, as well as a blog about writing and Pilates and some magazine articles and…as you can see, my mind is always whirring.

Q6: Has your writing helped you in other areas of life?!

I think writing is a fantastic outlet. It allows me to get many of the rushing thoughts in my head down onto paper (or lap top) and process my feelings about things. Anyone who knows me well will recognise many aspects of my life in the current book I’m writing. I get out any negativity and can be all gushy about stuff I love or am happy about.

Q7: How did the idea for 'If I Fall' come to you? Was it an idea which grew over time or did it come to you and then you had to write it before you forgot it?

The idea for If I Fall came to me on a plane to New York with my girlfriends actually! I had this thought about four friends and I wanted to focus on their relationships and friendships – and I wanted to push them to the limits and see which one of them might break. I knew who might break at the start and then it changed. Which I love! That’s what writing is all about.

Q8: I absolutely LOVED 'If I Fall', I was completely gripped from page one, how do authors do this? Is it something which comes easily to you or do you hope it happens with every book you write?

Well, thank you very much indeed! That’s a lovely thing to say. Erm….I’m not sure how we do it exactly. I think I just get so engrossed in the story, I write it as it’s coming to me. I plan it all out but it can change as and when and I just try and keep the pace flowing and the action happening! Yes, I hope that happens with every novel.

Q9: Do you have a group of friends like those in the book? Did they inspire any of the characters?

I think aspects of my life appear in all my novels in some shape or form. Everything I’m going through, friends, relatives etc. So there might be characteristics that my friends have but it might be something very minor – or I’ve tweaked it somehow and slotted it in.

Q10: What I loved most about 'If I Fall' was how, after everything that happened, the friends were still there for each other when they needed them the most. Have you ever experienced friendship like this?! Did you want the friends to come back together at the end or was there a whole different ending planned out?!

Thank you! Yes, I have experienced friendships like this. And I’ve also experienced the opposite! I have had friendships that were very strong and have fallen apart for a while – only to come back together again in a really positive way. I have also been let down by a few people I thought were very good friends when I’ve been at my lowest ebb. Disappointing, but I’m sure it’s character building. And will end up in a novel someday, no doubt!

Thank you very much for having me, I really enjoyed your questions. Sasha / Ella x

My review of 'If I Fall'

When the opportunity arose for me to read 'If I Fall' I knew just from the blurb that it would have me gripped and I was absolutely right, straight off the bat I was instantly hooked and couldn't get enough of it. I desperately wanted to know who wrote the suicide note and how they had come to such a desperate state of their life and where their friends were. Ella has a certain way of writing which just captures you from the start and hooks you in, having not read any of her work before I didn't have any preconceptions which is good sometimes where books are concerned. Not knowing how an author writes makes for a nice change and I for one will definitely be reading Ella's previous book 'One Last Wish' to see I'm as hooked by that one as I was by 'If I Fall'.

Having been at university myself I could relate to how close a friendship Connie, Jonas, JJ and Layla have. They say you meet friends for life at university and it certainly felt that way reading the book, despite life getting in the way and seemingly drifiting apart, when Connie, Jonas, JJ and Layla needed each other they were there for each other - in one case just in time it seems. I'll not spoil it for you because then you wouldn't want to read the book! But safe to say that the bonds that bind us do run deep and last more than the 3 or 4 years we're at university for.

I was absolutely 100% gripped by Ella Harper's writing, I found 'If I Fall' to be the perfect book for the cold winter nights we've been having recently. I could curl up on the sofa, tea in hand all snuggled under my dressing gown and get completely lost in the story. I was very sad to finish it because it meant I couldn't read it any longer! Like I said on twitter to Ella, "It's unputdownable!" 5/5!

Thanks very much to Ella Harper for being such a star and answering my questions today! if you want to find out more, just follow the tour!

Love, Sarah
