Cavens Country House Hotel Review | My Mini Break To Scotland.

Wednesday, 28 March 2018

Last week I went away to Dumfries in Scotland for 3 nights and stayed in the most beautiful Country House Hotel set in 20 acres of grounds with views of rolling countryside out of every window. It was absolutely beautiful so I thought I would review it just in case any of you are thinking of heading up that way yourself.

Having only 6 rooms, Cavens lends itself to intimate dining, attentive staff and the ultimate in luxury. Serving up local Scottish food, you're sure to be full every morning and satisfied every night. With complimentary afternoon teas served everyday at 4pm, you'll be driving down the private driveway faster than one of the deers you can see walking across the lawns every morning. Cavens are also dog friendly so you don't have to leave Fido at home whilst enjoying some of the best countryside walks Dumfries and surrounding villages have to offer.

With a small menu every evening, if you're staying longer than 2 nights you're sure to have time to sample everything Cavens have to offer. If you have dietary requirements you'll not have to worry as the staff will do everything in their power to cater to you. I should know as not only am I pescatarian but I also do not eat dairy or eggs so Angus (owner and chef) had quite the challenge but he went above and beyond to ensure I wasn't left out. Knowing that everything they use is made locally is sure to have your tastebuds flowing as the Loch Arthur farm shop they use is only 20 minutes down the road so is the perfect stop off point en route home!

The living rooms in Cavens are full of plush, deep sofas which are just too comfortable to leave, making them the perfect place to recline of an evening or to relax during an afternoon. With two wood fires you're sure to be kept warm during even the coldest of Scottish days. I'm sure Angus and Jane (owners) wouldn't mind if your furry friend wanted to curl up in front of one either! Featuring an 'honesty bar' you're invited to help yourself if the staff aren't around. Take it from me that there's quite a selection of gins which will keep you very happy for many a night!

The rooms at Cavens are all unique each have names which refer to the surrounding areas. Each room comes with a double bed, en-suite bathroom, flatscreen TV, desk and tea/coffee making facilities. (Milk is brought in a flask each night for your morning cuppa!) With each window offering up stunning vistas, you may find it hard to leave to get outside and explore! The beds are comfortable and give us singletons plenty of room to spread out whilst watching TV of an evening or morning before breakfast. The best feature in the rooms at Cavens are definitely the fluffy white robes hiding in the wardrobes. Nothing better than snuggling up one of an evening whilst you rest after a delicious evening meal!

I would highly recommend staying at Cavens Country House Hotel if you're in the Dumfries & Galloway area of Scotland. Angus and Jane could not have been more welcoming to myself and my family. I even got to meet their two Labradors on the morning we were leaving! A bonus to a dog mad girl like myself! I felt very relaxed during my stay, walking around the grounds and relaxing in the comfiest of sofas.

Love Sarah
