Giffgaff Gameplan | Spend Or Save Event | A Night Out In Leeds With My Friends | Playing A Board Game & Drinking Wine!

Tuesday, 15 May 2018

On Wednesday 2nd May I was kindly invited to a giffgaff Spend or Save Gameplan Event held at Cuckoo in Leeds, the whole of the upstairs had been transformed into a fairground theme, complete with carousel horses, disco lights and colourful paint. It felt like I had just walked into a fairground when I arrived and I absolutely loved it! Complete with bowls of sweets, balloons and a bar full of drinks the stage was set for what turned out to be a rather hilarious night of playing a board game whilst drinking copious amounts of wine!

So I should start by explaining who giffgaff are and why they're wanting to help you control your finances! (As well as being a pretty awesome mobile retailer!) giffgaff are designing a service with their members to help them be more in control & better at being on top of their money. They want to help members get savvy and get smarter insights into their finances, understand their money and build a better score, they believe that understanding your credit report can be the foundation for building healthy finances.

They're building a service that will help analyse the numbers and turn those numbers into smart insights, leading to simple actions. So that you can see how you can save, make better choices and improve your financial health. They've made a start.

But giffgaff want to tackle this beast together. Come join our Founders club. giffgaff have built a few tools to get you started, with more on the way. Their Founders club is where all their gameplan members can come to share their ideas and thoughts on how they can make gameplan better. It's the place to be if you want to have your say in what we do, have a question or if you want to share your tips, ideas and feedback.

They will be here to share with you exclusive sneak peeks, as well as run some feature ideas past you and keep you up to date with what's going on in the world of gameplan. At the heart of what giffgaff do is the idea that they’re laying the groundwork for a financial movement that celebrates and works with their members.

giffgaff revolutionised the mobile industry, and we built a network that's run by you, our members. We're much more than a mobile network, its philosophy of mutual giving and savviness, and we wanted to translate that into other areas of our member's lives.

Finance is complicated. But, essential to reach life goals. ‘Traditional’ banks are great at keeping your money.

But do you know where all your money goes to at the end of the month and how to make it go further?

giffgaff wanted to help change that.

Spend or Save is a game all about spending your money wisely and trying to save as much as you can. How you choose to do that is up to you! You start out as a fresh-faced 20-year-old with £1,000 to get by. As you make your way around the board you’ll have many incomings and outgoings to keep track of – from paying rent and dealing with bills to picking up a freelance job.

Each time you complete one circuit of the board you’ll find you’ve aged five years! It’s your goal to have more money than all other players by the time you reach retirement. To help you succeed, you can decide to spend money on specific ‘Life Goals’ at any time, like buying a car or even getting married! They’re expensive, but they carry bonuses that may help you out in the long run.

Just make sure you can always make it back to Pay Day!

This game proved to be the most fun I have had in ages! There's something so relaxing about playing a board game with friends whilst enjoying some drinks. I loved how easy it was to play the game, picking up £200 each time you got to pay day (or 'GO' if you're used to Monopoly!). You had to be careful if you landed on a card because it could lead to you getting more money or losing some of the things you had invested in - a car, an ISA, starting a pension, getting married and buying a house, the usual milestones of things you do as you get older! As the game progressed I managed to collect everything on my card, but within 3 rolls of the dice I had lost everything!!! I couldn't believe it!! But I did manage to get re-married though so all was not completely lost!

There were prizes available on the night for the three people who accumulated the most money out of everyone on the night and they would win varying amounts of money for a charity of their choice which I thought was really lovely. Sadly I didn't win but at the end of the day it didn't matter and it was just lovely to hang out with some of my favourite people for an evening whilst doing something a little bit different.

I really loved the whole atmosphere of the night and the venue looked incredible. It definitely reminded me of nights out at the fair when I was younger with my friends. It had only recently been finished the weekend before the event so we were the first people in there which felt incredibly special.

As you can see from the photos we were well looked after during the evening, I always love events which bring me together with my friends and new brands, although giffgaff aren't new to me because I am a member and use their sim card but to meet a couple of people behind the brand and actually get to know them, is different. It's like meeting someone you follow on social for the first time in real life! You think you know them but meeting them face to face, getting the chance to converse with them and learn about their philosophies is one side of blogging which appeals to me and allows me to learn more about brands I follow.

Thinking about your financial future can be scary, but giffgaff are here to make it easier for you, with all of life's ups and downs it's a good idea to get a good base so you're secure should the worst happen. Why not check out giffgaff's gameplan page and see how you could start safeguarding your future today!

Have a read of giffgaff's blog of the evening too if you fancy it!

Love, Sarah

*Big thanks to Matt Chappell for the photos and to Jennie for the invite to the event! Also to the team from giffgaff for putting this night together I had a wonderful evening.
