Valentine’s Day is supposedly the most romantic day of the year, but if you’re a happily single pringle like me, then perhaps you don’t want to watch a romantic movie.
So, here I’ve come up with 5 of the best UN-romantic movies to watch this Valentine’s Day!
Candyman – 1992 / 2021
OK, probably the MOST UN-romantic film/s you could possible watch, the original Candyman tells the story of grad student Helen Lyle who unintentionally summons the Candyman, a hook-handed creature made flesh by other people’s belief in him. It’s said that if you say his name 5 times in the mirror he will appear, but unfortunately he kills the people who summon him.
In the 2021 sequel, many years after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony (a visual effects artist) and his partner move into a loft in the now gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with an old timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.
If you don’t like horror, you’ll probably want to give this a miss, but what better antidote to the sickingly romantic nature of Valentine’s Day as a whole!
Fantasy Island – 2020
Fantasy Island, also known as Blumhouses’s supernatural horror film which re-imagines ABC’s 1977 television series of the same name. When the host of a mysterious island resort promises to fulfil the fantasies of his guests, they soon learn that their dream fantasies brought to life soon begin to turn into horrific living nightmares and an ordeal to survive.
This film will definitely kill any fantasy vibes you may be having on this most romantic days of the year! I’d say it’s slight terror more than horror, but it’s definitely worth a watch, especially now that it’s on Netflix after being in cinemas back in 2020. There’s only slight romance in this film and thankfully it’s short and sweet so no sick buckets needed!
Sing + Sing 2 – 2016/2021
A wonderful animated musical comedy film from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, the film centres on Buster Moon, a struggling theatre owner who holds a singing contest to save his theatre and how it affects its contestants’ personal lives.
Sing 2 is set after the events of the first film, where Buster Moon and his group put on a show in Redshore City whilst working to impress an entertainment mogul and enlist a reclusive rock star to perform.
I absolutely adore both of these films and can guarantee you’ll be singing into your popcorn with all the popular songs and perhaps shedding a tear or two, if you’re anything like me!
6 films: Jurassic Park/Jurassic World (2) /Jurassic Park Dominion – 1993, 1997, 2001, 2015, 2018 & 2022
OK, so technically 6 films in one, but they’re all separate and it’s up to you if you watch them all in one night or not! Jurassic Park is an American science fiction action film directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located of Central America’s Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs.
When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park’s power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond’s grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island.
If you like dinosaurs, you’ll love Jurassic Park! Personally, they’re some of my favourite films and I’d happily watch them all on Valentine’s Day as the only love involved, is for the dinosaurs themselves!
Secret Life Of Pets – 2016/2019
An American computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment. It tells the story of a Jack Russell terrier called Max who makes friends with the other animals in his building whilst his owner, Katie, is out at work. One day whilst out and about, they are both caught by animal control and when Gidget – a white Pomeranian who is in love with Max- discovers he is missing, she decides to find him with a little help from her friends.
Secret Life Of Pets 2 continues the story of Max and Duke and their owner Katie. She soon meets and marries a man named Chuck and they have a son, Liam, together. This sends Max into a spin and he soon becomes overprotective of him which develop into an itch and he soon has to wear the cone of death!
A trip to the countryside eventually leads to Max lessening his fears around Liam and all the animals learning valuable lessens.
This is such a wonderful film to put on, it will leave you feeling all mushy inside. And warning, you might cry (sorry, not sorry!).
I guess these are the least UN-romantic films you could watch on Valentine’s Day, but still, the antics of the animals will have you leaving laughing and wondering just what it is that your dog/cat/rabbit gets up to when you’re not there!
OK, so there you have it! 5 somewhat UN-romantic films to get stuck into this Valentine’s Day!
You no longer need to wonder what to watch this Valentine’s Day when you’re not wanting to be surrounded by love!
Let me know your favourite UN-romantic films you like to watch on Valentine’s Day, I’d love to add to my list!
